Why haven't I heard of TMS?

Know your options

The What ?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation ( TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It has been FDA approved for the treatment of major depression since 2008 and most recently it is approved for Obsessive Compulsive disorder. Psychotherapy and medication have been the gold standard treatments for depression, anxiety/OCD, addictive disorders and attentional deficits since the 1950's. Change is hard. Or maybe it isn't? It's not the old dog who can't learn new tricks? Potentially its all of us.  By design we are often reluctant, or just unwilling to try something new. Part of our cognitive schema perhaps is that we find comfort in the familiar. Could that comfort be keeping you anxious or depressed though?

The How Come?

So why aren't you looking into TMS as an alternative option for your mood, anxiety or impulse control disorder. Well, after we get past the idea of leaving the comfort zone we also have the notion that we are following the direction and advice 'of a medical professional' who encourages the trial of new medication for the acute or chronic condition. No harm in this, naturally I encourage trials. But ask yourself, how come you hear a drastic wave of praise about a current Netflix series, or a glow up about an AI Chat product or a current stock that's going to take off today, but you never hear a peep about TMS?  Health care consumption and pharmacological advances with subsequent production of medication does account for a significant portion of this country's economic output. In the US, healthcare spending; everything from doctor visits to prescription medication is an ongoing policy debate. TMS is not patented, there is no financial incentive to promote it, like that which exists within the pharmaceutical world.

The Who?

Decisions about your treatment will always be made based on a variety factors; including but not limited to your individual preferences, needs, severity of symptoms, and the availability of evidence about the safety and effectiveness of the treatment for you.

The Why Should I?

TMS is believed to improve the mood by affecting the same neurotransmitters actions of SSRI and SNRI medications. By stimulating specific brain regions, TMS has been shown to increase the availability of the brain's serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Clients report a remission of their depressive and OCD symptoms after receiving either (dTMS) deep transcranial magnetic stimulation or (rTMS) repetitive transcranial stimulation.  Its time to believe that this option might be right for you.  I have seen it work.

The Who ?

Clients who complete TMS have told me and I quote, " I am much less pessimistic its amazing," or "I am no longer fatalistic," and " I feel like I can just get up and go," and lastly "It's like I am thinking clearer than I have in years. Everyone should do this."
